Model Behavior: Healing Trauma Through Connection & Relationship

Today celebrates #VOICESDAY2021 and I was inspired to write this review of “Breaking Through the Concrete,” a documentary about VOICES Corp.

A beautiful representation of hope, love and care that is so desperately missing from the capitalism-tainted nonprofit sector today. One that I have done my best to model how I work after.

This documentary goes beyond the programs and services, exploring the humanity and genius of a person-centered approach.

Is social media “the problem” or merely a symptom of a system designed to fail us?

“Programs don’t work because they’re at the whim of the check writer.” - Judge George Gaither

”They give you a parade, they give you a holiday, yet they never give you what you need. Don’t go for the pump fake.” - Judge George Gaither

”Hard to access funding/funders and hard to explain the things that you can’t check a data for.” - Kia Wright

Connection to self helps us better connect to others. Relationship with self helps us to have better relationships with others.

To paraphrase Aaron Green:

”You’ll have kids go to jail or die, and that’s a reality of this work that I’ll never get used to.”

giving them agency so that their invested in their own healing.
